James M. Graham

James M Graham
James M Graham, originally from North Carolina and he’s now based in New York.

James Graham produces portraits and narrative imagery in fashion, fine art and erotica, and uses both film and digital to get the end result. James has spent 20 years as a professional filmmaker; be it producing, writing, directing and shooting, and continues to work on a number of projects, which has included ‘Guns and Roses’ videos. Here (right) is a foto from his ‘self portait’ series.

In 2003 there was a change of focus, as he began to work on his own personal erotic project - ‘the Rooms’ series. And because of his filmmaker experience, his photography tends to have a cinematic feel to them. Between 2003-05 he worked with numerous of models towards his project goal.

His inspiration is a combination of the manipulation of light, the human figure and his own fetish and desires.

James enjoys portraiture with a narrative angle and was featured within the Taschen book, ‘The New Erotic Photography’ (2009).

James has since produced the book, ‘Some of This is True’ (a book with an intriguing title). It is a collision of two halves; female nudes standing on chairs and the other of, sad playboy bunnies. Maybe a strange juxtaposition, but this is a fascinating, sexy and expressive combination. Sometimes dark and erotic.

He is aware that what appears erotic to him, may not be the same for anyone else. For him it’s not just about the ‘nipple’ content, but the wider concept of eroticism.

The latest work explores emotional narratives, such as romance, lust, intimacy and betrayal. The images are conceived as fragments of stories, featuring people who have very complicated love lives.
